British Railways Mark 2 Carriage

After the success of the Mark 1 carriages British Railways (BR) set their sights onto a newer design, which gave birth to the British Railways Mark 2 Carriages. The main difference between a Mark 1 & Mark 2 carriage is the body & frame work. The mark 2 had been built to give them more strength than a Mark 1 which would help protect the passengers in the event of an accident. A main design change was the curvature of the body work at the bottom & sides to help combat areas of corrosion that had be come apparent on the mark 1 carriages.

Over the course of Mark 2 carriages being built they started to be segregated into different categories (A,B,C,D,E & F) due to a variety of modifications that were being made during the construction of them. The biggest change came around when the Mark 2Ds started to be constructed in 1971 as they were instead fitted with air conditioning, the main differences was there were no longer any opening windows and that all types were built with Electric Train Heating only from this point onwards.

Mark 2 Carriages at the MNR:

At present there are 13 Mark 2 carriages on site, with the MNR owning 12 of these. Throught the last 4 years, starting in 2020, 3 out of the 12 MNR owned Mark 2 carriages have had various work, repaints and overhauls which have been completed inside Dereham Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration & Maintenance Shed. The shed was built with the support of the EU Leader Funding Rural Development Programme (Project Ref. 109532).
