Our railway stations are perfect for films set in most eras. With a mix of vintage and modern trains, we can set the scene for any time period. Previous Productions: The potential of the Wymondham – Dereham – County School railway line for filming has been recognised ever since the dying days of steam. The British Transport Films Unit used County School Station in 1959 for the production “The Diesel Train Driver” – an instructional film to introduce drivers to the modern diesel railcars being introduced into traffic following the withdrawal of steam. After withdrawal of passenger services, County School Station was used in 1966 as one of the main locations for the Anglia Television produced soap opera “Weaver’s Green”. County School Station was again used in 1992 disguised as Gare de Nouvion in the penultimate episode of the British comedy classic “‘Allo ‘Allo!”. More recently, local film producers Capriol Films featured County School Station as Eynsford Station for a film, “Peter Warlock – Some Little Joy”, about the life of the early 20th century composer, Philip Heseltine – better known as Peter Warlock. October 2009 saw a successful film shoot at Dereham Station by local company, Independent Studios UK (now Timereel Studios). The film, “Haunted London”, featured scenes taken in the ticket office, station master’s office and on the platform in the guise of Tulse Hill Station, London (c. 1950s). Documentary series over the years have used the railway over the years for a variety of productions, these include: A production for the Discovery Channel Minor filming for STV BBC productions of "Beeching's Track" with Nicholas Crane in 2008 Talkback Thames TV & BBC production of "Great British Railway Journeys" with Michael Protillo BBC Look East production "Inside Out" with David Whitley Channel 5 production of "Norfolk & Suffolk: Country & Coast" More recently the railway has been used for the BBC1 Drama "The Bodyguard" & Netflix's Bollywood verison of "The Girl on the Train". - Signalling & Gradients | Mid-Norfolk Railway
Signalling & Gradients The Mid-Norfolk Railway (MNR) is proud to operate a traditional mechanical signalling system that ensures safe and efficient operation along the line. Our signalling infrastructure combines historic charm with modern functionality, playing a vital role in daily railway operations. Currently, the MNR boasts two operational signalboxes: Dereham Central and Thuxton, with a third, Wymondham Abbey Church Lane, set to enter service in 2025. Thuxton Signalbox Thuxton signalbox holds a pivotal role in the MNR’s signalling system. Commissioned in 2015, it was the first permanent signalbox to open on the line, replacing a temporary groundframe housed in a hut that initially managed the passing loop. Today, Thuxton is the heart of the railway’s operations as without this signalbox being open, no trains can leave Dereham or Wymondham. Thuxton features a fully mechanical lever frame, providing hands-on control over the signals and points in its section of the line. It stands as a testament to traditional railway operations, allowing visitors and staff to experience the heritage of British railways. After extensive preparation, it was fully commissioned as a signalbox in December 2023. Dereham plays a critical role in ensuring smooth operations on the line. Like Thuxton, Dereham Central must be operational to allow train movements between Dereham and Thuxton. Its modern integration into the traditional system highlights the MNR’s commitment to blending railway heritage with operational needs. Class 50019 "Ramillies" Rolling Stock 1/1 Builder Vulcan Foundry Introduction Date 23rd April 1968 Withdrawal Date 19th September 1990 Configuration Co-Co Status Undergoing Repairs Number Held 50019 Owned By Class 50 Locomotive Association British Railways Class 50 Diesel-Electric Type 4 The British Railway Class 50, also know as English Electric Type 4, is a class of diesel-electric locomotive that was built by English Electric Vulcan Foundry Works between 1967 - 1968, a total of 50 were produced. The class was built to be able to work passenger trains on the West Coast Mainline between Crewe and Aberdeen. They soon became a common sight across the west coast with the majority being allocated to Crewe and the remainder to Bristol Bath Road. By 1974 the majority of the West Coast Mainline was electrified therefore making the class redundant, due to this the fleet was transferred to the Western Region working passenger services from London Paddington to Penance instead. Due to increasing reliability problems the decision was made to refurbish the entire fleet at Doncaster Works between 1979 and 1984 however, these modifications didn't last long as by 1990 the fleet once again became unreliable. By 1992 only eight of the class still remained in service with the rest either being stored or scrapped. 18 out of the 50 produced are still active today across various British Heritage Railways with a few still operating mainline charters/freight. 50019 50019 was released from English Electric Vulcan Foundry on 23rd April 1968, originally as D419, and allocated to the Western Line (LMR) (WL). On 18th April 1978, it was named "Ramillies" after the warship HMS Ramillies. Over the course of its working life it was transferred to Stoke Division, Bristol Bath Road & Laira. 50019 was then withdrawn from traffic September 1990 due to being a surplus to requirements, until the Class 50 Locomotive Association purchased it.

- Mark 2 Carriages | Mid-Norfolk Railway
BR Mark 2 Carriages Rolling Stock Mk 2 TSO 5211 (A Dunford) Mk 2 FK 13446 (A Dunford) Mk 2 FK 13447 (A Dunford) Mk 2 TSO 5211 (A Dunford) 1/3 In Service 1964 - Present Builders Swindon & Derby Works Introduction Date 1963 - 1975 Body Type Steel British Railways Mark 2 Carriage After the success of the Mark 1 carriages British Railways (BR) set their sights onto a newer design, which gave birth to the British Railways Mark 2 Carriages. The main difference between a Mark 1 & Mark 2 carriage is the body & frame work. The mark 2 had been built to give them more strength than a Mark 1 which would help protect the passengers in the event of an accident. A main design change was the curvature of the body work at the bottom & sides to help combat areas of corrosion that had be come apparent on the mark 1 carriages. Over the course of Mark 2 carriages being built they started to be segregated into different categories (A,B,C,D,E & F) due to a variety of modifications that were being made during the construction of them. The biggest change came around when the Mark 2Ds started to be constructed in 1971 as they were instead fitted with air conditioning, the main differences was there were no longer any opening windows and that all types were built with Electric Train Heating only from this point onwards. Mark 2 Carriages at the MNR At present there are 13 Mark 2 carriages on site, with the MNR owning 12 of these. Throught the last 4 years, starting in 2020, 3 out of the 12 MNR owned Mark 2 carriages have had various work, repaints and overhauls which have been completed inside Dereham Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration & Maintenance Shed. The shed was built with the support of the EU Leader Funding Rural Development Programme (Project Ref. 109532). E5211 Tourist Standard Open (TSO) 1966 Derby In Service Owned by the MNR. Donations The Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust, a registered charity, relies on the generous support of the public to keep East Anglia’s longest heritage railway running. In recent years, rising costs of materials and labor have placed significant financial pressure on heritage railways across the UK. Many, including ours, are launching appeals to fund the essential work needed to preserve Britain’s railway heritage for future generations.
