Class 142 061 Rolling Stock 1/1 Builder Derby Litchurch Lane Works Introduction Date 1986 Withdrawal Date 2020 Car Types DMS & DMSL Status In Service Number Held 142 061 Owned By MNRPT British Railways Class 142 Diesel Multiple Unit The British Railway Class 142 Diesel Multiple Units were built by British Rail Engineering Limited and Leyland Vehicles Limited at Derby Litchurch Lane Works between 1985 - 1987, with a total of 96 units (192 cars) being produced. During the classes 35 years in service (1985 - 2020) they unfortunately became very unpopular with rail commuters due to their poor ride quality at speed and being able to feel every joint in the track. Starting in the early 1990s the entire fleet was mechanically upgrade due to the original parts starting to fail, this consisted of a new more powerful engine and associated transmission. By mid 2020 all remaining 94 units were withdrawn from service due to them no complying with the Persons with Reduced Mobility Technical Specification for Interoperability. A total of 26 units (52 cars) were sold into preservation with the remainder being scrapped. 142 061 (55711 & 55757) Diesel Multiple Unit 142 061 is formed of vehicles 55711, a Driving Motor Second, & 55757, a Driving Motor Second Lavatory. Upon the unit being withdrawn from mainline service in 2020 the unit was stored at Gascoigne Wood before being delivered to the MNR in September 2020 and then entering service in May 2021.
- Mark 1 Carriages | Mid-Norfolk Railway
BR Mark 1 Carriages Rolling Stock Mk 1 BSO(T) 9010 (A Dunford) Mk 1 FK 13225 (A Dunford) Mk1 BFK 14023 (C Clark) Mk 1 BSO(T) 9010 (A Dunford) 1/6 Builders Derby, Doncaster, Eastleigh, Swindon, Wolverton & York Introduction Date 1951 - 1963 Body Type Steel In Service 1951 - Present British Railways Mark 1 Carriage Upon the nationalisation of the railways in 1948 British Railways (BR) decided that due to the previous "Big Four" companies (GWR, LNER, Southern & LMS) all having had their own unqiue designs in carriage building, that they would incorporate the best features from each of the former companies into a standard carraige design, which then in turn gave birth to the design of the British Railways Mark 1 carriage. The main aspect of this new design was that it was much stronger, therefore in the event of an accident the passengers would have greater protection. The design however, did not just get used for locomotive hauled passenger carrying vehicles, it was incorporated into multiple unit stock and a variety of goods vehicles. Due to the design of these carraiges they could easily either be construced into First or Second Class vehicles. During the privatisation in the 1990s the remaining Mark 1 locomotive hauled vehicles were withdrawn due to them having be progressively replaced by the newer Mark 2 and Mark 3 stock over the 1970s & 1980s. In the present day they can still be seen on the mainline with touring companies but they are mainly found on heritage railways due to the simplistic design and easy maintenance. Mark 1 Carriages at the MNR At present there are 11 Mark 1 carriages on site, with the MNR owning 7 of these. Throught the last 4 years, starting in 2020, 5 out of the 7 MNR owned Mark 1 carriages have had various work, repaints and overhauls which have been completed inside Dereham Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration & Maintenance Shed. The shed was built with the support of the EU Leader Funding Rural Development Programme (Project Ref. 109532). - Alice on the Wondertrain | Mid-Norfolk Railway
STATEMENT - ALICE ON THE WONDERTRAIN Unfortunately, it is with deep regret that we must announce the cancellation of our Easter event, Alice on The Wondertrain. Following the hugely successful launch of this original production in 2024, we were excited to bring it back for 2025. However, like many other entertainment ventures, Alice on The Wondertrain has been impacted by the current economic climate, leading to lower-than-expected bookings. As a charitable trust, the Mid Norfolk Railway has a responsibility to act in the best interests of the railway and our supporters. Due to unforeseen financial pressures and the current booking levels, we have made the difficult but necessary decision not to proceed with this event. We share in the disappointment that this will bring to our visitors, volunteers, and supporters, but we want to reassure everyone that all other planned events for 2025 will continue as scheduled. Customers who have already booked for Alice on The Wondertrain will be contacted shortly to arrange full refunds. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support.
