Senior Catering Assistant

The Senior Catering Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality food and beverage services at the heritage railway, ensuring a welcoming and efficient experience for all visitors. Working under the direction of the Catering Manager, the role involves food preparation, customer service, cleaning, and assisting with the day-to-day running of catering outlets, on train catering and preparation for special events.

· Reports to: Catering Manager

· Budget responsibility: Reacting to labour costs in line with the needs of the business

· Decision-making: Routine operational decisions within clearly defined guidelines

· Reporting frequency: Day-to-day reporting to the Catering Manager or nominated supervisor.

Key Areas of Responsibility

· Customer Service: Provide friendly, efficient, and professional service to all visitors.

· Food Preparation: Preparing and delivering the food offering, following health, and hygiene procedures

· Cleaning & Hygiene: Follow correct hygiene and cleaning procedures to ensure high standards of cleanliness in all catering, serving and seating areas.

· Stock & Supplies: Assist the catering manager to ensure appropriate storage of food and catering supplies, stock rotation, restocking and monitoring stock levels, reporting any shortages.

· Teamwork: Maintain a professional working relationship with staff and volunteers to support smooth catering operations.

· Health & Safety: Follow all relevant food hygiene, health and safety, and allergen procedures and undertake all mandatory training.

· Other Duties: Assist the catering manager with administrative tasks such as stocktaking, record keeping and procurement as required.

Experience

Experience in a customer-facing role, ideally in catering, hospitality, or retail.

Experience in a commercial kitchen.

Type of knowledge areas:

Basic food hygiene awareness - Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of starting work)

Skills:

Ability to work as part of a team in a busy environment.

Friendly and professional attitude toward customers

Good communication skills

Personal qualities:

Approachable demeanor and positive attitude

Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.

Reliable and conscientious.

Other factors:

Willingness to undertake cleaning and manual tasks.

Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.

Driving license, as occasional work may be required be at County School tearoom.

Operations Manager

The Mid-Norfolk Railway is seeking an experienced and motivated Operations Manager to lead the safe, efficient, and effective day-to-day running of railway operations across our heritage line.


This is a key role within the organisation, overseeing day-to-day operations, managing safety-critical processes, and supporting the staff and volunteers who keep the railway running.


Working as part of the Management Team, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining high operational standards and help shape the future of our heritage railway.


About the Role


As Operations Manager, you will take lead responsibility for operational delivery and safety management within the Operations Department. You will oversee rostering, operational planning, competence management, and the development of staff and volunteers across a range of safety-critical roles.


You will work closely with internal departments, external industry partners, and railway regulators to ensure services operate safely, professionally, and in compliance with all relevant railway standards and procedures.


This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced railway operations professional who thrives in a dynamic environment and is passionate about heritage railways and volunteer development.
Salary Range: £36,123.13 – £41,200 dependent on experience


Key Responsibilities
● Lead and manage operational safety processes, including RAMS, risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety documentation
● Coordinate the day-to-day operational delivery of train services
● Manage operational rostering and resource planning
● Oversee recruitment, training, competence management, and ongoing development of operational volunteers
● Produce and manage operational notices and working timetables
● Maintain operational records, certifications, and departmental documentation
● Support and motivate teams to deliver strategic objectives and high operational standards
● Work collaboratively with internal departments including T&RS, P-Way, S&T, Commercial, and Station Teams
● Liaise with external organisations including Network Rail, Train Operating Companies, ORR, and RAIB
● Contribute to wider organisational leadership and operational improvement initiatives

About You
We are looking for someone with strong operational leadership experience within a railway
or other safety-critical environment.
You will ideally have:
Essential
● Proven experience in heritage or mainline railway operations
● Experience leading teams in safety-critical environments
● Strong planning, coordination, and operational problem-solving skills
● Experience managing volunteers and coordinating across multiple departments
● Knowledge of railway safety regulations and safety management systems, including ROGS and RM3
● Experience producing RAMS, operational notices, and working timetables
● Recognised competence in a railway safety-critical role (e.g. Guard, Signalman, Responsible Officer)
● Full UK Driving Licence
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
● A calm, adaptable, and safety-focused approach


Desirable
● IOSH, NEBOSH, or equivalent Health & Safety qualification
● Experience with railway rostering and training systems
● Budget management and operational planning experience
● Experience in incident investigation processes
● Experience or knowledge of the Heritage Operations Processing System
