Volunteering - Youth
Young People at The Mid-Norfolk Railway
We are passionate about getting young people involved in the Mid-Norfolk Railway – you are our future.

We offer opportunities for young people to learn unique and valuable railway skills that can support a wide range of future careers. We are also happy to verify and sign off volunteer hours for recognised schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Ways to Get Involved

There are currently two ways for young people to volunteer with us:

Under 16s – Volunteering with a Parent or Guardian -
Young people under the age of 16 may volunteer only if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
-
Both you and your parent/guardian must be paid members of the Mid-Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust
-
Both must complete the relevant induction and any required training
-
A bespoke induction is provided for young volunteers and their parents/guardians

Once your membership is in place, email youthvolunteer@mnr.org.uk and we will begin the onboarding process.

Ages 16–17 – Independent Youth Volunteers -
Young people aged 16 and 17 may apply for specific volunteer roles (listed below).

We have limited but growing capacity to support under-18s, thanks to a dedicated team of trained supervisors who are keen to help young volunteers develop.
-
A parental consent form will be required
-
Parents/guardians do not need to attend with you
-
Applications must be made by emailing youthvolunteer@mnr.org.uk with a CV and covering letter
Please keep checking back, as we are developing additional roles and may also offer event-specific opportunities, such as our Polar Express™ services and gala days.

Work Experience & Long-Term Volunteering

We do not accept work experience students under the age of 16 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. If you are aged 16–17 and studying at college, we are happy to recognise suitable volunteer roles as work experience.

While short placements can be helpful, we strongly encourage long-term volunteering, which benefits both you and the railway by allowing you to build skills, confidence, and experience over time.

Looking Ahead

We are planning to develop a dedicated youth group for under 16s, running on selected days throughout the year. More details will be announced in the future.
