Back On Track Update: Crownthorpe Bridge & Wicklewood maintenance

Work to bring Crownthorpe Bridge back in to use and allow the Mid-Norfolk Railway to recommence train operations from Dereham through the communities of Kimberley and Wymondham continues at pace. At the moment, the Mid-Norfolk Railway is operating trains between Dereham and Thuxton with occasional trains stopping at Hardingham too.

With the bridge waybeams removed a couple of weeks ago, structural inspections focusing on corrosion and protection have taken place earlier in the week and decisions on what – if any – further remedial work will be required aside from the waybeam renewals. Whilst these visits took place, volunteers were also present undertaking a number of activities from vegetation clearance to preparing the bridge for the waybeam installation which is expected to take place shortly.

Also last week, attention was focussed elsewhere in the temporarily closed section at Wicklewood - Rails already identified that required replacing due to the bridge above causing water run off over many years onto the rails below are an example of preventative maintenance to avoid complications in the future.

We continue to welcome donations for the continuing maintenance and expansion of the railway - more information at mnr.org.uk/donations

I read your update about the Crownthorpe Bridge maintenance and it really showed how much work goes into keeping heritage railways running safely and smoothly for everyone who loves to ride or visit. When I was finishing a big article and felt stuck on unclear sections I had to Hire expert for journal article editing as something I used to fix confusing parts late at night, so I know how clear writing helps complex work make sense to readers. Your post reminded me that careful care and teamwork keep long projects on track.

good to hear about the rail replacements at wicklewood. preventitive maintenance is smart. i was just reading about risk management on Tenobet Casino UK and it's similar logic. fixing small issues before they become big problems is the way to go. hope the inspections go well and we can get back on the train soon. keeping my fingers crossed for no delays this time.

The combination of structural inspections, vegetation clearance, and prep for the new waybeams shows how much coordinated effort goes into reopening even a small section of line. The preventative maintenance at Wicklewood is also encouraging—replacing those water-damaged rails now should prevent bigger issues later.

It’s almost like playing Snake Game: you have to plan ahead and avoid running into problems down the line!
