Historic MNR Diesel Rail Crane Returns to the Tracks After 3-Year Restoration

The Mid-Norfolk Railway is proud to announce the completion of a major restoration project as its rare 10-ton Diesel Rail Crane has officially emerged from the Traction & Rolling Stock shed following a meticulous three-year restoration and repaint programme.

The project marks a significant achievement for the railway, as this industrial workhorse — once a key component of the rail network — has been brought back to life through the dedication and expertise of the MNR’s restoration team.

The restoration, which began in 2022, involved minor mechanical repairs & overhauls, repainting, and the sourcing of period-correct imagery. The effort was led by the MNR’s Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration Manager, supported by a team of passionate and highly skilled volunteers who donated hundreds of hours to the cause.

To celebrate the completion of the restoration, the crane will be on public display this weekend at Dereham Station as part of the railway’s popular 1940s Weekend. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the crane up close.

This event promises to be a highlight of the summer season, offering a chance to step back in time and experience a living, breathing part of Britain’s railway heritage.
